About 13 months ago I began the looooooong process of applying for the peace corps. I thought it was worth a shot. There were 4 main parts to the process, the online application, then a local recruiter interviewed me after reviewing my online application. After this interview I was told I needed to wait while the recruiter found a program for me. I was waiting for a nomination but this did not mean I had a spot, just that I was nominated for a spot along with other nominees. Six months later I heard back from him nominating me for a program in the Caribbean doing some sort of work with special education. I was then told I needed to get medically cleared by getting a physical, dental check up, etc. I WAS CLEARED! So all I could do was wait because at this point it was out of my hands. Around October I started to get anxious but had to keep waiting. Finally, about a week before Thanksgiving I got a call from a recruiter in Washington D.C., where the Peace Corps headquarters is located. She asked a few questions about my life now and if I was still interested. I was and apparently answered the other questions correctly because she said a lot of stuff that I was overwhelmed with and then finished with "congratulations, your invitation kit will be in the mail". Since then it has been a bit surreal, but it is official. I am going to be volunteering with the peace corps in the Eastern Caribbean teaching Special Education along with helping with other activities in the community. I will be gone for 27 months starting in February 2010. Where I will go from there I have no idea yet, but I am pumped beyond belief!
I did have to say goodbye to an awesome group of people today. This was just the first of many goodbyes but it's bitter sweet. I'll miss my little massive Kiltie family! Thanks for making my past 2 summers so flippin' fun!
